Traveling through New Zealand I had a few absolute, don’t care about the cost, will not go home without it, must do’s. One of them was renting a helicopter for an hour to fly around the Wanaka area, and the other was to do a proper, several hours long horse ride in the mountains. The horse ride I found was at Dart Stables in Glenorchy, a very small town an hour’s drive north of Queenstown. The name ‘Trilogy Loop’ refers of course to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, that had used this area quite a lot when it was shooting. The mountains and landscapes we rode through had been used as the Misty Mountains and as a back ground for Isengard. The forest of Fangorn was also recorded in this area, near a place called Paradise (yes, truly!), but we didn’t go there. I was given a very well behaved horse called Blue – actually all of the horses were very well behaved and seemed to be living a very good life.

The ride took us over river beds and through mountains. I absolutely loved it. Imagine having scenery like that right in your backyard!
We came by some of the fields they use for their own horses, which were actually pretty far out.
We met one of the other, much larger, groups at the northern edge of Lake Wakatipu.
Our tour leader was very sweet and made sure to get photographs of everyone on their horse!
It was a grey day and we did actually get a little bit of rain at the end of the trip, but nothing major. It rather added a bit of moodiness to the already impressive scenery. I was one happy gal (although with severely sore thighs) when we were home again!
If you are going to New Zealand and want to book a ride, here’s their website: Trilogy Loop on Dart Stables website. They have rides for all levels of rider, so even if you just want to sit on a horse in a walking pace for an hour, still in this fantastic landscape, you can do that as well.
Have you been horse riding during your traveling? Tell me all about it in the comments!
