The last whole day I had on my tour in South Africa we started the day with a boat trip out in the river near St. Lucia to see some hippos. We had actually already seen a few in the Kruger National Park, but they had been few and far away. This was an entirely different experience!
We set out on the first departure that day. All grey and quiet and maybe not super promising.
But it didn’t take long before we saw the first hippo. They were generally pretty unconcerned with us, as long as we kept our distance.
We also saw just a few single crocodiles. Our captain told us it was a bit too cold for them to be out at that point.
On the lookout.
We were pretty excited to see these two. They’re so big..!

And suddenly one side of the boat got kinda crowded.!
We had just found our first big group of hippos. We were lucky enough to find a couple more groups that were just as big.
And there were baby hippos.!
And these two teenagers play fighting.
No teeth though, so no harm done.!
We saw a couple more crocodiles and some fish eagles before we returned to shore.
Another one of the bigger groups we passed. Going out to see real hippos in their natural environment up close was definitely a good experience, and a good one to end the tour I had been on. We had started in Johannesburg 6 days earlier and after this tour we would drive towards Durban which was our final destination.
