Carlsberg Brewery lies in Valby, Copenhagen, and the place is open every day to the public. You can go for the exhibition and brewery tour (guided or non-guided), take a free ride with the horse carriage and try the beer tasting. This was a typical Danish summer day (meaning sun and rain in equal measures) and I had dragged a good friend of mine with me for a beer-y afternoon!

The horses were used to pull the beer wagon around the city. Today they are used to give free horse carriage rides.

This stable houses horses of the Jutlandish race of very fine quality.

We went for the beer tasting where we got to taste three different beers. First a Weissbier (white beer), that is the unfiltered, orange one on the left. We learnt that you have to roll the beer bottle in your hands for a little while before you open it to properly distribute the flavour. The second beer was an Indian Pale Ale, the one in the middle. Super delicious, kind of fruity flavour and not too bitter. Had one more of those afterwards. Lastly we got the Dark Lager, which was the original Carlsberg beer, that is the one on the right. I usually don’t go for the dark beers because I usually think they taste of rye bread, but this one I enjoyed.

All these old beers could be found in the exhibition, which is free if you visit on a Friday. It was quite interesting to have a walk around the old brewery, and the exhibition did very well in telling the story of the brewery from the beginning in the 19th century until now.

The brewery arranges an event every Friday during the summer with music and food in the beer garden. When we visited it was a Jazzy Friday – super nice atmosphere. We got a brioche bun pulled pork burger which was definitely not cheap, this being Copenhagen, but it was good nonetheless. AND it had stopped raining when we were eating which was a big plus.

We walked home through one of the many small gardens in Copenhagen in a light rain shower. Have you been to a beer tasting? Recommendations from around the world are more than welcome. Comment below!
